WonderMine’s upgradeable pickaxes and Diamond Pickaxe NFT

Our WonderMine game in Decentraland has had a steady increase in monthly active users (MAU) the past few months. We are pleasantly surprised to see our community blossom, even though we’re still in the super early days of development! We are close to 750 MAU this month, which is waaay more than we expected at this point, so I just want to start off by saying thank you!

I want to create a quick blog post about a topic many of you care about, and something that is vital to the sustainability of the park.

WonderZone craftable NFTs

We chose to make our Meteor Chaser and Steampunk wearables craftable even though we knew we’d most likely make more Mana if we straight up sold them. We like wearables as much as you do, and it’s great seeing so many players working towards crafting your first wearables in the game!

The wearables supply won’t last forever, and we can’t rely on the Decentraland DAO to keep awarding us new wearable licenses every cycle. Wearables are a non-renewable resource (like oil and coal IRL). Relying on them as the main reward for our players is not sustainable in the long run. It has also been great to see so many players craft the Diamond Pickaxe. As many of you already know, the Diamond Pickaxe will become the first WonderZone NFT. Producing our own NFTs means we will not be solely reliant on getting new wearables licenses, and we can continue indefinitely creating new NFT rewards as long as our players are interested.

Now if we let players craft Diamond Pickaxes without a cap, the pickaxes will in theory decrease in value for each additional pickaxe. We want this pickaxe to be valuable, so we’re putting a cap on it. The cap will be determined by how many players are able to craft one before the end of the year. (Deadline: December 31, 2020). WonderZone NFTs will each have a limited supply and special features that make them unique.

Roughly 30 players have crafted Diamond Pickaxes so far. We expect at least that many more before the end of the year. Whatever the number is, will be the cap of the Diamond Pickaxe and we will never make that particular axe craftable again.

So what about the new players? The diamond pickaxe is the best one in the game. It would be unfair if new players would be locked out, right? Starting next year, we will offer new, seasonal pickaxes, that have similar stats to the diamond pickaxe, but they will look different with unique power-ups! We want to keep on adding special edition NFT pickaxes and other tools, that will only be available for a few months, and then set the cap based on how many are crafted. If only 17 people craft one within a few months, the cap is 17. You get the point.

Already have a Diamond Pickaxe? Don’t worry — you’ll be able to craft seasonal pickaxes too and maybe sell them (or build a massive NFT pickaxe collection). Our current pickaxe designs are pretty basic, and we want to take some artistic liberties by creating more interesting designs going forward.

We hope you are as excited about this as we are, as this is necessary for the WonderMine game and WonderZone Amusement Park to be sustainable. We might also offer a very limited amount of seasonal pickaxes for sale at the beginning of each season which will help fund the park (and allow us to spend more time on it). But if you have concerns about that, please let us know!

The pickaxes are only the beginning of our own NFTs and we already have tons of ideas for craftable NFTs in the future, stay tuned!

TLDR:

- We can’t rely on wearables forever
- Diamond pickaxes capped at Dec 31, 2020
- New seasonal pickaxes and other NFTs introduced in 2021
- Come play WonderMine at -29,55 in Decentraland!
